ABS edgebanding

In Cantisa we manufacture ABS edgebanding. We can also manufacture ABS edgeband from any of our PVC references, under a minimum order.

ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) is a plastic compound widely used in different fields and also in the furniture industry. Its characteristics converts it in a most adequate raw material for the production of edge-bands.

Muestrario Poros | Embossing catalogue

Following the latest trends in surfaces, we can offer different pores on ABS edgebands. These textures reproduce the same finish structures as the actual melamines.

The result is a better integration of board and edge.

Our samples and homologation department will provide you the edge-band samples suitable for the melamine you require. Within the matching process of our ABS edges for a particular melamine we consider:

Vein

We choose the printing roller to develop and copy the vein of the design.

Tone

Matching the edgebanding with the melamine under daylight D65.

Embossing

To reproduce the same finish structures of the actual melamines we match the embossing.

Gloss

We match the gloss of the melamine board, to ensure homogeneity within board and edge.

Profile tone

The profile tone to ensure that the inner tone, when trimmed, matches the melamine surface to be copied.

Printing

The definition and printing have to be in accordance to the paper surface to be copied (matched).

Varnish resistance

The resistance of the varnished surface has to be adequate to the use and normal wear of the furniture.

Cutting test

The adherence of the surface varnish by means of Cutting Test.

Adherence

The application of primer to the base of the edge , to ensure an efficient adherence of the edging.
What are the advantages and inconvenients of ABS edges in comparison to PVC edges?

Advantages

1- STABILITY
ABS is more stable, as it maintains more efficiently its physical characteristics to temperature changes, whereas PVC softens when exposed to heat, and hardens when exposed to low temperatures (risk of splintering), thus being ABS more stable.
2- SPEED
In consequence to the above mentioned, the application of ABS edges can be accomplished at higher speed, and at the same time provide a higher finish quality of the edge-band.
3- RESISTANCE
Due to its composition, it has a higher resistance to surface scratches. It is an important fact for plain colors as – in wood grain designs – the varnish applied provides the necessary resistance.
4- ECOLOGICAL
It is more ecologic tan PVC. The combustion of PVC produces toxic fumes (hydrochloric acid), this not being the case of ABS.
5- WEAR OF TOOLS
Due to its composition, ABS will minimize the wear of tools used in the application process of edges.

Inconvenients

1- COMBUSTION
The combustion of ABS produces a non-auto-extinguishable flame in comparison to PVC which is auto-extinguishable.
2- PRICE
ABS is more expensive than PVC.
3- DESIGNS
ABS has a minor variety of designs.
